Holiday Sewing

Even though the excitement and fun of summer are over, in some ways it is comforting to get back into the routine of predictable fall days. There is something to be said about schedules, timetables and deadlines; sometimes it is easier to get things accomplished when you are already busy.

Autumn is also a time to get back to your sewing. When the weather is a little cooler and your gardens are ready for winter, why not turn to the relaxation of sewing? And, it's only eight weeks until all the parties and outings of the holiday season begin!

Different occasions call for different styles. In past years, when I have been doing my holiday sewing, I have gone to a department store and tried on several different garments. Although the fit may not be good and the fabric may not be my favorite, I can see what styles I prefer, over others. Then I choose a pattern close to that style and fabric I adore and I know that I have a good–fitting garment that is unique to just me.

New Look gauchos 6510N1 can take you from the office to the party with just a change of top. The fabric we have chosen for the pants has a subtle copper metallic thread running through it: team that with a solid camel–colored top like Simplicity 5204S2 during the day for a clean office look.

After work, throw the conservative in a bag and bring out the daring that will take you through the night. Simplicity 4095S0 with bling will fill the bill! Use your imagination with your gauchos: plaids and herringbone twills can go from office to evening and solid black gauchos may end up being the most versatile element of your wardrobe! 4095S0

4238S1 Probably the easiest way to dress during a busy season is… a dress! No need to mix and match tops and bottoms or worry about heel heights and pant lengths. For an evening out, consider Simplicity 4238S1. The styling of this dress offers a great palette for the imagination: any number of sequined dress fabrics will look wonderful and for something very formal, try overlaying a sequined lace on top of a solid taffeta for the skirt portion, leaving the bodice solid. The empire waist makes the bodice into a perfect canvas for machine embroidery!

4273S1 4273S0

Simplicity dress 4273S1 is perfect for an office party or for attending your kids' concerts. The fabric you choose will lend the ambiance you want: white on black offers sophistication, a bordered black print will be the only one of its kind, sequined red is wonderful during the holidays but can be pared down for the rest of the year and a solid pink taffeta can be worn again and again. Top it all off with jacket 4273S0 made from embroidered three–dimensional satin and you'll be the hit of the night!

There is a variety of embroidered silks and satins in the stores right now, and New Look 6610N1 is ideally suited to these fabrics. Match a green and pink satin jacket with the pink taffeta dress, or the copper silk with the 6510 gauchos.

Velvet–flocked satin will fancy up any outfit and the green embroidered silk is so beautiful it can stand alone. It isn't hard to imagine 6610N1 in a Japanese embroidered satin like the samples here. Any of these fabrics would be perfect for the purse pattern that you receive free with any 6610 purchase.
