Moving a Zipper to a New Location

By Beverly Chapman

Doesn’t it seem that when you are looking for a pattern you find a style you like, but there are features that stop you from choosing that pattern? One of those features commented on by many of our Members is, “I love those pants, but I can’t reach behind to a center back zipper.”

With the following instructions you will be able to take your center back zipper and make a side seam zipper.

1. Decide which side you’d like your zipper on. Most ready to wear has the side seam zipper on the left, because the majority of people are right-handed. When you do it yourself, you get to choose!

2. On the pattern side seam, make a mark 7 5/8” (19.75 cm) down from the waist on the stitching line of the pattern pieces concerned. This will be where your 7” (18 cm) zipper ends.

3. Trace off your waistband pattern piece, transferring center back, center front, fold line, buttonhole, button markings. Do not transfer any waistline notches.

4. Fold your traced pattern together cross-wise matching the center front line to the center back line and crease the fold. This fold will mark the spot where the waistband matches the opposite side seam.

5. Cut out your waistband, mark the center front, center back and side seam crease line. Apply interfacing as usual.

6. With right sides together, attach the waistband to the garment matching the original center front line of the waistband to the front side seam, the side seam crease to the opposite side seam and the center back to the back side seam. Stitch the waistband to the garment.

7. Once the waistband is attached you can complete the waistband according to the original instructions.
